Hey folks, please do not reply directly to this email.  It will end up in electronic limbo!  If you want to reply, please email CaptWright@ChokoloskeeCharters.com

It has been awhile since our last update.  Summer is, obviously in full swing now.  It is hot in the middle part of the day, but it is so nice in the mornings.  I love this time of year.

We have to get up early to catch the bite, but we have been successful getting the snook to hit topwaters.  I had been throwing smaller baits until recently ... then out came the "super spooks".  The average size of the fish went up about six pounds.  I love the sound of slurping snook in the mornings!

Just as the rains started, we went through a week where I thought the snook would starve to death they had lock jaw so bad.  I think that we are through that now.

Sight fishing for both snook and redfish has been excellent ... Both inside and outside.  The water rises fast this time of year, so our window is narrow on the outside ...We always have the backcountry.

The second kayak transport boat is almost ready ... waiting on the welder.  I will post some pictures once it is ready.

Many of the scheduled camping trips have booked.  However, we just added two trips.  We will be on Cape Sable Camping/Fishing Feb. 15, 16 & 17 and camping outside of Wizard Creek fishing the full moon Dec 21 and 22.  (There should be some great snook fishing then).  Come join us.  These trips are a hoot!

WHAT'S New ...

  • Please congratulate the winners of this month's drawing for the free fishing trip!!  Gary Robinson (St. Pete, FL) & Jim Dolan (Allen, TX) Thomas Todd (Daphne, AL) & Stephen Moon (Hebron, KY) were the May winners and Gene Strong & Stanford Knowles won in April.  Remember, you must register  for each drawing to be eligible to win.  Click here for more info on the Kayak Fishing Trips

  • Kayak Fishing on the Yak Attack ... During the summer, we are doing trips on most of the weekends.  We do have the mid week dates posted.  The Crystal River Trip and the Suwannee River House Boat trip is booked full.  We still have availability on the July 18, 19, 27 and August 13 dates, however.  If these dates do not work for you, please call us and we will work out ones that do!  The fall schedule will be posted very soon.  Click here for the Yak Attack Fishing Schedule

  • July fishing forecast ... fish early and high ... Click to read more.

  • October begins the camping season in Everglades National Park.  Overnighters in the Park are a blast.  Several of the camping/fishing trips are booked full already.  Feb 15th, 16th & 17th, we will be camping on Cape Sable again  Dec 21st and 22nd we will be fishing Wizard Creek .... great snook fishing. (Read more about out trip last February fishing amongst crocodiles.) If you are interested in putting together a private camping/fishing trip, please give us a call.

  • If you are planning a fall fishing trip, please contact us sooner than later. The fall calendar is filling up.  (To the left is Kevin Thomas of Houston with a very nice Everglades snook caught in May on his "special" spoon. This 20 lb girl was released unharmed)

  • We are adding a second Yak Attack (The Yak Attack 2) to the fleet this month.   Most weekends we have had to dedicate the boat to the trips open to anyone who wished to join.  With the new kayak chariot in operation, we will now be able to do private trips on the weekends as well!

  • There is more than just fishing in Everglades City and Chokoloskee Island ... bring the family. Be sure to see "What's New" on the Everglades Area Tours site ... click here. Look for us on the Weather Channel in October and PBS's Wild Florida now.  www.EvergladesAreaTours.com

April 23, 2007 -- WHAT'S NEW -- Everglades Area Tours

April Drawing Winners Please congratulate the winners of this month's drawing for a free Kayak ECO Tour. Karen Tullo (Naples, FL) and Sheryl Houle (Lake Worth, Fl). The March winners were Steven Hechler (Wellington, FL) and Veronica Barber (Ft. Myers, Fl). You can enter the drawing simply by signing up for our newsletter. The next drawing will be May 1st. Good luck!!

Recent sightings ... Most of the migratory species are back north by now. However, the smaller birds, crossing the Straights of Florida are still stopping on the oyster bars to rest. The Peregrine falcons have been having a "field day". The Swallow Tail Kites are here in good numbers and are simply magnificent. Oyster Catchers with their bright orange bills have been hanging around the oyster bars and are best seen at the lower stages of the tides. The Skimmers are also back and we are seeing them regularly. Most all of the ospreys, brown, pelicans, egrets and cormorants are still tending their nests, but the chicks are nearing fledge. The rosette spoonbills have been here for a while, but we are still having to look for them tucked away. However, more and more are arriving. It will not be long before some of the mangroves look like pink snow cones from roosting spoonbills!

Sea Turtles ... We have been paddling amongst dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles most everyday It is getting time for the turtles to hit the beaches to lay eggs. They have moved nearer to shore recently so we seeing them almost every trip now.

Everglades Area Tours.com is on the Weather Channel -- CLICK HERE for a small sample video of the program.

Watch for Everglades Area Tours on PBS. Capts. Laura Lee and Charles Wright recently did a shoot for the PBS series Wild Florida. The show focus is on the habitat of the mangrove estuaries. Capt. Laura Lee is a Florida Certified Naturalist and leads many of the Kayak ECO Tours. It is very easy to get absorbed in her passion for the Everglades.

Photo-Safaris www.EvergladesAreaTours.com will be offering several extensive Photo-Safari tours beginning late this year. Our, single day Photo-Safaris are, of course, still available. As the area surrounding Everglades City is huge, the tours will be spread over several days. Everglades National Parks' 1.6 million flooded acres is just part of the whole picture. The 10,000 Island Preserve, Big Cypress Federal Preserve, Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve and Collier Seminole State Park are adjacent to the Park and offer unique photo opportunities in their many varied ecosystems.

We will be "swamp walking" in search of wild orchids one day and using the stealth of a kayak and canoes to photograph large, but very skittish salt water crocodiles another. Airboats will take you into the saw grass expanses and you can hike the dry and wet prairies of the uplands with a mono-pod. Stable shallow draft boats, able to handle three to four tripods simultaneously will be used to get us to the flocks of wading birds at the mouths of remote tidal rivers. These tours will be very unique and offer the serious photographer an unparalleled opportunity to shoot one the most unique ecosystems in this hemisphere. The tour will be offered complete with food, lodging, transportation and guides. The number of guests will be limited and advanced reservations will be required. Please contact us for details or watch for them on the website.

March 30, 2007 -- WHAT'S NEW -- Everglades Area Tours

Capt. Charles Wright and Everglades Area Tours welcome you to the very edge of the Florida's Last Frontier. The splendid natural world of Everglades National Park and the 10,000 Islands is open to our guests with a variety of Guided Everglades Adventures.

Enjoy a guided boat tour in the 10,000 Islands; Experience kayak fishing in the Everglades National Park backcountry; Canoe through magnificent mangrove tunnels; Enjoy a guided bicycle tour amongst old-growth cypress hammocks; Catch tarpon and snook on a guided fishing trip; Hike into the prairies, wetlands and sloughs to find rare orchids; Take a guided birding trip; or fly over the entire area in a float plane.

Located in Everglades City, ½ hour from Naples & Marco Island; Less than 1 1/2 hours from Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers & 2 hours from West Palm Beach, we are a great destination for a day trip. Combine tours in a single day or over several days to enjoy the small town ambience of our waterside community. Be it on foot, bicycle, kayak, canoe, power boat, and/or airplane, you will enjoy a complete experience with Everglades Area Tours.

Two of our most popular tours are the kayak eco-tours and the kayak fishing trips, originate in Everglades City, we use a specially designed kayak transport boat to safely and comfortably whisk our guests and the kayaks very near to where the wildlife are that day (no long paddles!). The kayaks are comfortable, safe and fun all ages. Most importantly, however, they are very silent and unobtrusive to the wildlife allowing you to get closer to the wildlife than by any other means. Led by experienced captains and naturalists, these tours truly are the best way to experience the Park.

Recent sightings ... The Swallow Tail Kites are here and magnificent. Oyster Catchers with their bright orange bills have been hanging around the oyster bars. Skimmer are also back and we are seeing them regularly. The ospreys have hatched and we often get a look the little fuzz-balls. Pelicans, egrets and cormorants are also setting. The brown pelicans chicks are beginning to poke their heads up now. The huge, migratory white pelicans are still here, but they are getting restless. It will not be long before they begin looking north. Birding has been very good. On one recent Kayak ECO Tour, we identified over 32 species of birds.

Hey folks, please do not reply directly to this email.  It will end up in electronic limbo!  If you want to reply, please email CaptWright@ChokoloskeeCharters.com

It is 5:47 in the morning and the outside temperature is 41 degrees ... the coldest day of the year.  Winter arrived last night!!  It looks as though it may be here for several more days.  At least the weather guru's are forecasting the temperature to be back to 79 later in the week.

As much as destain as I have for the cold, it may do the fishing some good.  On some of the blustery days of winter, we usually can sneak deep in the "back" with the kayaks and wear out the small snook and tarpon-ettes.  This year has been so mild, that they have not been forced to move that far back and have really been tough to find.  However, that should change over the next several very cold days.

With the warm water, fishing has generally been good although the trout fishing is a bit off.  For those looking for "action", however, there are enough Spanish mackerel around to keep you busy.

Some of the most fun that I personally have had in a long time was with a 5 wt in the kayaks slinging clauser minnows amongst the macks.  If the mackerel weren't running down the fly, the big lady fish or trout were.  A three pound  pompano is about all a 5 wt can handle! We have also been catching some nice snook on the outside, but I am sure that will end today. The redfish are plentiful, but finicky ... at least for me.

We have done several camping/fishing trips recently that were a lot of fun.  You can count on us doing more of these trips next fall.  There is something about being on the beach after a day's fishing sitting around a campfire with a rod in a sand spike soaking a big bait with good friends and a cold adult beverage.

Be sure to check out www.EvergladesAreaTours.com for your non-fishing guests and friends.

Time to check the thermometer again ... I can't wait for the summer fishing!!

Gopher Creek Birding Trips Gopher Creek is one on the most unique areas within the western Everglades National Park. A creek that runs from the gulf waters through the mangrove wilderness into the backwaters of the Wilderness Waterway, it is a super-highway short cut for both fish and wading birds. While the place is always rich in fodder for the birds, sometimes the place is like "fish soup", alive with wading bird feed. The area is always teeming with life and is a great place to bird most any time. However, when the area is "soupy", the concentration and variety of water fowl is amazing. The birds are generally distracted in the Creek as many are intent on feeding. Combined with that and the stealth of the kayaks, you can get very close to the bird life ... closer than most any other place that we know. A wonderful place to photograph.

It is about an hour's boat ride each way, but we do make bathroom stops at several remote wilderness campsites that have facilities. On the way out, we run through the mangrove backcountry waters of Everglades National Park. Departing in the 10,000 Islands, we pass Chokoloskee Island and travel up the Lopez River, though Crooked Creek, into Sunday Bay and then along the Wilderness Waterway above the headwaters of the Huston River through Chavelier and Cannon Bays. At the mouth of Gopher Creek, we deploy the kayaks for a 2 to 2 1/2 hour paddle into the Creek. On the boat ride back, we runpass through the Chatham River, stopping by the infamous Watson's Place, to the mouth of the Huston River. We return to Everglades City along the Gulf beaches and shorelines of Duck Rock Cove, the Three Sisters, Pavilion Key, Rabbit Key, across the mouth of Chokoloskee Pass into Sand Fly pass and then back into Chokoloskee Bay. The boat trip alone is wonderful and a great way to experience the Park. This trip is the most extensive Park tour available and lasts about 6 hours. Enjoy some fresh stone crabs and seafood, over looking the Barron River after the tour at City Seafood. Advanced reservations are required. The cost is only $149 person, but there is a three person minimum.

3rd Annual Everglades Kayak Fishing Paddle-In This years event will be February 24th. This is a fun, social event that last year had 70+ kayakers of all ages participating. The paddle-in is free, but we do ask for a donation for the Smallwood's Store Museum. Come join us ... you will have a blast and meet some new friends. Vickie will be serving her famous conch chowder, bratwurst and pastries on the beach!. Launching from Chokoloskee, we drift with the tides to a sand beach at the mouth of Chokoloskee Pass. Once the tide begins to rise, we leave the beach and drift/paddle/fish back towards Chokoloskee with the tidal flow. For those that wish to stick around, we will be having a fish fry at a local waterside restaurant. On the 23rd, there will even be a kayak fishing school offered in conjunction with the event!! We will have a raffle on the beach with a new Heritage Redfish 14 kayak and several tours as prizes. We will have rental kayaks available. Click here for more info ...

Mangrove Tunnel Kayak Drifts. The Everglades has the largest mangrove forest in this hemisphere. Some of the most spectacular areas are within mangrove tunnels and canopies of creeks that meander their way to saltwater estuaries. Timed with a flowing tide, we launch the kayaks in a freshwater environment and move along with the flowing water through creeks that are canopied by lush vegetation. Rare bromeliads and orchids line the walls of the tunnels in many areas, a multitude of birds are in the lakes, tarpon can be seen rolling in the creeks & the scenery is spectacular. These mangrove "tunnels" connect several lakes and eventually lead out to the saltwater via a tidal river. Most of the trip, we are actually drifting along with the current with little paddling. At the end of the drift, we have a kayak transport boat waiting for us for the return trip to Everglades City. The cost for this very unique trip is $195 per guest. Trips are limited to four guests and advanced reservations are required.

12-13-06

The past year was a good one for Vickie and I but it was made especially nice having no hurricanes!  The 2004 and 2005 were tough on everyone in the Southeast, but in October of 2005, Chokoloskee took a direct hit (and over nine feet of water) from Hurricane Wilma.  The area has rebounded well, although slowly for some.

A few weeks ago, we launched www.EvergladesAreaTours.com.  This site is still very much in its infancy, but will be growing in content with time.  Its sole purpose is to provide folks with a source of information and reference for the Everglades City and Chokoloskee area.  There is so much more than fishing … hiking, canoe and kayaking, birding, aerial flights, spas, museums, B&B’s etc.  The next time, you are here, bring the family and really enjoy the flavor of the area. Stay tuned …

Fishing had been very good recently with and should remain so for a while the water temperature is above 70 which keeps the snook happy.  Winter did arrive early, however.  In middle of November we had a very strong front that rattled the fishery for over a week.  I thought the fish would starve from not eating.  However, once they decided to feed again, it was bedlam! Over all, this fall was one of the best for snook both in the backcountry and on the outside.

Redfish are still plentiful, but you have had to look really hard for a tarpon recently.  Speckled trout are really making their presence known.  As the season progresses, the water is really clearing and the sight fishing has really improved. It seems that there are not as many cobia as in past years, but we certainly have not been after them as much. It has been really hard to get off the snookin’.  When we have ventured to the near shore structure, there has been a lot of action.

Again, from both of us, have a wonderful and safe Holiday and thanks for everything!

www.ChokoloskeeCharters.com   Everglades City & Chokoloskee Fishing Update and Forecast

        CaptWright@ChokoloskeeCharters.com 239.695.9107

November is bringing the predicted changes to Everglades City and Chokoloskee Island. The recent cold fronts cooled down the waters a bit, bringing with it our winter season.  Noticeable was the arrival of the cobias, brown marlin, as we affectionately know them around here.  The place is now over run with Spanish mackerel … nice fish 23” – 26”.  The biggest she-snook will move offshore to the near shore structure and the speckled trout have moved in force.  The redfish population is thinning out a bit and the big tarpon will all but disappear by the end of December leaving their smaller sized youngsters around to play with us.

There are and will be plenty of these line-sided acrobats here, however … especially in the deep backcountry.  On a recent kayak trip we release 113 snook and four tarpon, the next trip 74 and two days later 66.  (Notice that I am not mentioning the day between … It still is fishing!)  They were a blast.

I had the pleasure of fishing with Bill and Karen Elder of Arkansas for several days.  Karen brought her 80 plus year old father, Austin, an ex-WWII fighter pilot who flew the “hump” in Burma escorting bombers … some very dangerous flying at 20,000 feet in freezing cold over mountainous peaks. I have been a flight instructor since 1979, but it has to be “severe clear” before I tackle the sky this days … things have changes.

Bill and Karen fly fished, while Austin spin fished their four days of fishing.  The first day, Bill and Karen were taken through the mangrove tunnels to the back lakes for their introduction to fly fishing the glades fly. They managed a pile of small snook on the long wands, but Karen jumped her first tarpon on fly … I think it changed her life.  Austin, came back from his trip, telling stories of “a lot of fish, I do not know what they were, but there were a lot of fish”.

After a day off, Karen and Bill, along with two other couples ventured into the back creeks for some more snook fishing, Austin was with Bert Barkus slinging lead at redfish.  We had about 70 snook that day, but I was thoroughly embarrassed early on being “snook-handled” twice by fish that way too large of for my tackle.  The highlight, however, was Karen (again).

She put on a quite a (movie quality) demonstration.  I was around the corner in my kayak actually watching another guide struggling to catch fish.  He was drowning live pilchards watching the popping cork bob around.  He had just eased by us as Patty made three casts and caught three snook from her kayak. The faces were long on his boat that day.

I heard Karen start hooting and hollering with excitement.  I paddled by the flats boat, to get where I can see what happening and stood up in the kayak to watch.  She was anchored up on a pocket of snook that were absolutely thrashing her popping fly.  Every cast they would strike, breaching the surface two and three times each cast … but most would miss the fly!!!  Each smash of the fly brought a yell from Karen.  I was laughing so hard I almost fell down in the kayak!

She pulled out numerous fish, but most simply missed. I was so amazed I had her check to see if the fly still had a hook!  The bite never stopped, her arm just pooped out and she left the spot with fish still smacking her fly.  My side hurt from laughing and the poor live bait guide was just left dumb-founded.  I never seem to have a video camera when I need it…it was something special to watch how much fun she was having.

The next day, a weak front passed and the whole area got lock jaw … just like some one turned out the lights … lots of tripping over our lower lips that day … from everyone who fished the waters.

The following day, however, we all fished together on the Blue Bird Daze…Bill, Karen and Austin.  It was great to have them all together.  I am sure by now you have figured out the star of the show…yep, Karen … Cobia, mackerel, jacks, ladyfish, gag grouper, goliath grouper and even a few shots at tarpon.  Bill and Austin were not far behind, but once well into the macks, Bill brought out the fly rod.  Fishing without a wire leader, he purged his fly box pretty well, but had a good time doing it.

The fishing in December is usually good.  As the weather cools, the fish tend to get correspondingly smaller.  You can expect lots of speckled trout, mackerels and blue fish on the flats…many 100 fish days right into February. Sight fishing in the shallow, clear back country water for snook and redfish is some of the best fishing you will find.  The near shore structure can be full of action … There are still plenty of large snook and tarpon around early in the month, but by the end, the water cools enough that they move offshore … so we follow.

We'll see what this next front will do ... I guess winter is here!

I hope you had a good holiday!  It has been a while since we last updated things.  The winter season was hectic and we were all busy (thanks to you!!).

(LEFT - Brian and Karen Kavelage, LaCrosse, WI, with one of seven black drum released one day in March)

Easter, however, marks the unofficial start of the spring fishing season.  Most of the winter guest are returning home as thing heat up.  Though things were mild this winter, we did have a period where the fishing was tough during March because of the winds... However, things have picked up well.

April closes out the spring harvest season for snook.  This changes the character of the anglers and the snook fishing.  The true sportsman come here now seeking the really big fish. May is the time for some of the largest fish of the year.  During this month the biggest of the snook move into the passes and cuts of the Western Everglades and 10,000 Islands.  They are here to spawn. … more

Please congratulate this quarter's winners of the free fishing trip ... Victoria Campbell (Huffman, Tx); Larry McWreath (Warren, OH); Jose Odriozola (Miami, FL); Elsy Lehman (Ft. Myers, FL); Chris Summers (Houston, TX).

I just updated the website with the pictures from the last six months…and then I lost them in electronic limbo.  If anyone is “web savvy” … Help!!!

YAK ATTACK Schedule

·         The "Paddle-In" this last February 18th was a lot of fun.  The weather and tides were perfect.  Sixty-one outfitted kayaks were on hand to enjoy the conch chowder, bratwursts and deserts on the beach.  When the tide turned and started flowing back in, the speckled trout fired up and most caught fish. That evening, we topped things off with a fish fry at City Seafood.  Thanks to Richard for staying open for us.  Next year the event will be Saturday February the 24th!

·         I am selling the Maverick Mirage 2 at the end of June.  She is a great boat in excellent shape with many extras ... contact me if you are interested.

Fishing has been very good for snook and redfish here recently. The tarpon however have not been very cooperative and may not be until March!.  Speckled trout, in large numbers, are making the group trips a blast with many triple and even quad hookups.  Grouper are in the passes in good numbers, and of course, the winter sheep head are here. Things should stay “hot” except for the very cold mornings.

Please congratulate the winner of last quarter's drawing for a 1/2 day Fly/Spin trip…

Peter Esposito (Amhurst, MA)!!

Also, Ray Halgren, of Tampa Bay, was the successful bidder on the ½ day trip auction.  Fly Fishing in Salt Water magazine sponsored an auction to benefit the victims of the Guf Hurricanes.  Chokoloskee Charters donated the trip and cabin accommodations.

Vickie and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and prosperous New Year.  It seems that it was only yesterday that were looking at the last year’s end.  Time sure does fly when you are having fun (or get older)!!!

The hurricanes the past two years certainly have presented some challenges, but we still love Everglades City and the Chokoloskee area and can’t even think about being anywhere else.

We are excited about our new plans for next year and are really looking forward to another great year of fishing the Everglades with our angling friends…

Please remember the important things… “Time, health and the people around you”

Until the next time that we see you, have a great Holiday and thanks!!!

Wilma packed quite a wallop and affected the whole area.  She moved fast, thank goodness, or things would have been much, much worse.

We faired well in Everglades City ... minimal boat, dock and house damage. We have all services and are back in operation!!!  However, some dirt bags broke into own home while we were evacuated the night before the storm.  They ran-sacked the place, stole almost allof my fishing gear and all of Vickie's family jewelry.  They left prints, however … (he-he).

Chokoloskee did not fair as well... it looks as though a bomb went off ... we lost two docks and parts are in the midst of a diesel spill clean up that soaked everything.  The Everglades Airpark hangers were destroyed, but somehow the airplane received no structural damage.  The aircraft is trapped in the hanger, however.

We received many concerned calls and emails after the storm.  It is really comforting to know that there are those that you can call on.  Help to the community came quickly and in many forms … food, generators, equipment, labor, etc.

There has been substantial alterations to the marine environment.  Many new passes have opened up, some beaches and islands are all but gone and there are a lot of damaged and stressed mangroves.  Many of my old favorite “holes” are not the same.  However, I am looking forward to learning the “new” area as I expect many new fishing opportunities.

This is an important economic time for the community.  What we now need is for all to ignore the sensationalized reports in the media and treat things “business as usual”.  Come on back and enjoy the stone crabs, the fishing and our small town ambience.

See you on the water and THANKS!!!!

WHAT'S New ...

·         Hurricane Wilma was BAD!!!  But we are GOOD!  Despite what is portrayed in the news media, we are in full operation and living life!!!  Yes, we have power, water, restaurants and hotels in Everglades City.  Chokoloskee did not fair as well, so we are fishing out of Everglades City.  Come on in, "the water is fine"!!!

·         Please congratulate the winners of this quarter's drawing for a kayak fishing trip on the "Yak-Attack" ...
