Southeast – Proposed Rule Published for Vermilion
Snapper Rebuilding Plan
This proposed rule would establish new management measures as part of a
rebuilding
plan for vermilion snapper. The allowable harvest for the first 4-year
interval starting in 2005 is 1.475 million pounds, roughly a 25%
reduction. Measures to accomplish this reduction include:
1) An increase in the minimum size limit from 10" to 11"
total length;
2) a bag limit of 10 vermilion snapper within the 20-reef fish aggregate
bag limit. This action, with the increase in minimum size limit, would
achieve approximately a 21% reduction for the recreational fishery; and
3) a closed commercial season from April 22 - May 31 each year. The closed
season, with the increased minimum size limit, would achieve approximately
a 26% harvest reduction for the commercial fishery.
